1 | Health and Safety at Work etc Act.

The Health and Safety At Work etc Act came into effect in 1974 and is the basis for all health and safety legislation. Section 2(3) says the employer must prepare, and revise when necessary, a statement of general health and safety policy.

The health and safety policy sets out your general approach to health and safety and states how you intend to meet your health and safety obligations and responsibilities.

The health and safety policy must also provide the information employees require to work safely and support the company’s health and safety targets and goals.

You must share the policy, and any changes to it, with your employees and also ensure your staff understand the policy.

2 | Health and Safety Policies

Policies are important because they demonstrate that you have taken the necessary steps to set out guidelines and processes to avoid problems. For example, in the case of alcohol and drug abuse, an employer should make it clear what the rules are, what help is available to those with problems, and what penalties might apply for a colleague or employee under what circumstances. Policies also protect your business because with these in place the rules are clear and communicated to colleagues and workers, so problems are much less likely to occur in the first place.

If you are a contractor, you need to have appropriate policies in place for accreditation with CHAS or other certifying bodies, and in most cases also for applications for inclusion on approved contractor lists. And you usually need to confirm that you have policies in place when tendering for projects.
